2024 Secondary School Qualifying Tournaments - Results


Central Zones

On Friday 14 June to Sunday 16 June 2024, we had 29 teams from Wellington, Nelson, Blenheim and Dunedin came to the Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre for this year’s Central Zone Secondary School Underwater hockey tournament.

We had 340 players from 14 schools playing some great hockey across the four grades as they all looked to qualify for this years New Zealand Second School Underwater Hockey Tournaments.

After 120 games we had our winners

Nelson College for Girls won the Junior Girls grade with a 4-1 over Wellington Girls College.  In the Junior Open grade the Nelson College team were too good for the Wellington High School team winning 9-0.  In the Senior Open grade Wellington College won 5-1 again Nelson College and to end a good outing for the Nelson teams, Nelson College for Girls were too strong for the Wellington Girls College team winning 6-1.

The top 5 teams in each grade now have the opportunity to go to Schools Nationals in Tauranga in September.

Northern Zones

On Saturday 13 June the Northern Zone Secondary Schools Underwater Hockey Cup was held at West Wave Aquatic Centre where the teams from Auckland, Warkworth and Whakatane in the junior grades came to play some Underwater Hockey with the aim to qualify for this years Schools Nationals.

Whilst the numbers were lower than usual the competition amongst the 9 teams was good with Mahurangi College winning both the Junior Girls and Junior Open grades.

 

In the following weekend the Northern Zone Secondary Schools Underwater Hockey Championships ( Senior Grades) were held at the Bay Wave Aquatic Centre in Mount Maunganui, where 15 teams played across the two grades.

There were some close games and the quality of the hockey was very high with Mahurangi College winning the Senior Girls final against Glendowie College and Glendowie College beating Howick College in the Senior Open Grade final.
